Yesterday's Yearning

Yesterday's Yearning
by Ray Frost
Fingertips straining
To cover knife breadths
That may as well be miles.
Ask of me everything
If only I could
Hold you tonight.
Days grow colder
So I’d freeze the seas
Skitter the frosty planes
For you.
My blood boiling frenzy,
Light the night and the fog
To never lose sight
Of my love.
I’d walk till my
Feet wore to bone,
Till the feathers
Fell from my wings
And the winds
Could lift me no more.
Cruel minutes are grim
The hours slow to ages
And the seconds
Tick my tears
As they fall.
My skin that once held me
Now ripped by the wind
Flew west ward
To sun and to sea
To breeze so to breathe,
Leaves me bleeding alone,
This sun rising East
Seeps blood from the bone,
Dries my smile
And my hope.
When will I see you?
When will rain fall,
Kissing me always
Like freckles on cheeks.
When will blades
Slice the land that divides?
Give me a star
To point my way forward
I’d place all my faith
In your eyes.
Look for you blindly,
I’d listen though deaf,
I’d chase even if
My legs were mere
Bundles of shards.
You are my reason
That abandons all fact,
My map not yet drawn.
But now you lie
Further than past,
More hidden than truth,
Away from me
And my heart.
I’ll search for you always,
My life in my blood.
You drag my feet forward,
Wrench eyelids
To meet the new dawn,
I’ll see you again
One day.
The day you return
From your thoughts…
