Collie Tales
By John Swan
Skiply Diply was a gentle collie dog and loved to play all the games that dogs like to play. Nobody would have thought that he had such a hidden power, not even Skiply Diply knew it until the day a brontosaurus came to stomp on his village!
It was so long ago that everything looked very different than it does now, brontosauruses had been extinct for hundreds of thousands of years, or so everybody had thought! It was true that there had been tales of villages being stomped on by brontosauruses but everybody had known that they were just stories. Skiply had not paid any attention to the stories, they did not really interest collies and anyway he could always hide in his basket if any brontosauruses did come stomping towards him. Well, that is what Skiply had thought until the day a brontosaurus did come stomping towards him!
Skiply was playing in the woods near his village, the people were busy collecting firewood and he was helping them by running off with the good bits of wood. He was enjoying his game when it started to get dark, it was still early in the afternoon so perhaps it was going to rain. The people looked up at the sky but there was not a cloud in sight only a huge grey shape towering over them - a brontosaurus!
The brontosaurus smiled and crushed the large trees that were in its way as it stomped after the people who were running screaming back to their village. The people had forgotten about Skiply Diply, he was alone in the woods with nobody to protect him! The brontosaurus had seen Skiply and thought that it would be a good idea to stomp on him, a giant grey foot lifted up and hovered above the frightened collie that had frozen in terror.
Then something strange happened to Skiply Diply - he felt very dizzy, his legs started to wobble and he shook all over then like a bolt of lightening, Skiply Diply shot out from beneath the brontosauruses foot and leapt high into the air. His small mouth had suddenly became huge, his awesome jaws crashed open and shut with deafening bangs! The brontosaurus did not know what was happening, how could such a little dog suddenly become so large and ferocious? The brontosaurus would never know, Skiply Diply bit its head off with a single snap of his awesome jaws!
Skiply stared at the brontosaurus, he could not believe that he had defeated it, he was frightened and confused, how could he have managed to fight such a huge monster and beat it? He did not know, he just sat down and stared at the brontosaurus, trying to remember exactly what had happened. The people had seen the brontosaurus fall to the ground but they had not seen Skiply Diply fight it, nervously they came and looked at the headless monster. What had happened? Nobody seemed to know.

Slowly Skiply Diply explained that he had fought it, 'don't be silly' the people said. Skiply realised that he could talk to the people as well but they were too busy looking at the brontosaurus to take any notice. Then one of the people told Skiply Diply to get out of their way, this made Skiply angry and he bared his awesome jaws. Everybody looked at Skiply in surprise, he had never looked like that before! Skiply picked up one of the trees that the brontosaurus had stomped on crushing it into little bits saying angrily 'go on, have some more firewood!' Then Skiply walked off into the woods, the people could not believe what they had seen, and heard! Had Skiply Diply really defeated the brontosaurus?
Skiply Diply walked right into the very middle of the woods, nobody ever went that far, they had always been too frightened. He sat down by a large pile of rocks and boulders and stared at one of them, the rock had strange carvings on it and most of the carvings were underneath the rock.
Then Skiply Diply started to howl. He did not know why he was howling, he just started to do it! It was such a loud and long howl that the trees began to shake and their leaves fell off and when he had stopped howling the whole of the woods seemed to be strangely silent and peaceful. Then the trees started to shake again, something was rushing towards Skiply but he was not at all frightened, he could sense that it was something friendly. The ground shook as ten more collies came charging through the woods, they stopped when they saw Skiply Diply then looked at each other in surprise.
'What's going on?' One of the collies asked, he could speak and so could the other collies! They had heard Skiply Diply howling and had all come running at a fantastic speed. None of them knew why, they just had done it!
Skiply Diply told them about the brontosaurus and everything else that had happened to him, something had made him come to this place in the woods and perhaps the rock with the carvings on it had something to do with it.
The collies pushed the rock over, they had found it very easy to do even though the rock was very heavy. The carvings were in a strange kind of writing, but the collies understood them. They told the story of 'Noble Beast Collies', a special type of collie dog that had powers beyond belief. They were the gentlest, kindest and most thoughtful of animals, but also the most fearsome and ferocious beasts when they needed to be. Years and years ago when brontosauruses had tried to terrorise the world the Noble beasts had fought them and won, the brontosauruses had gone away but the noble beasts knew that they would be back. So much time had passed that the Noble beasts had gone back to a normal way of collie life, but when they were needed again the Noble beasts would find each other.

The collies looked at each other in amazement, they were all Noble beasts and their hidden powers must have reappeared when the brontosaurus came! The carvings on the rocks were true, they had been summoned to fight the brontosauruses.
The collies knew that there must be more Noble beasts that did not know of their own powers, they would have to go and find them. The carvings said that a Noble beast would answer the call of another and somehow Skiply Diply had already known that when he had started to howl, that was why the other collies had answered his call. They would track down the other Noble beasts and meet again at the rocks in a weeks time.
When the collies met again the next week another fifty Noble beasts had joined them, they decided that they would build a big meeting house by the rocks and call it the Collie Club.
Over the years more and more Noble beasts were found but they did not all live at the collie club, there where Noble beast collies all over the country, ready to fight the brontosauruses or to help whenever they were needed.
Even today, the collie club still stands and is full of Noble beast collies waiting to go on their next mission. Nobody knows where the collie club is, and the Noble beasts will never tell anyone. Not even the ordinary collies know where it is.
The collies that you meet are probably not Noble beasts.
Don't try anything silly to find out if they are.
